Rear Main Seal
answers to my question.
I have a 1965 f100 sb 352 3spd
I was wanting to know how hard is it to replace the rear main seal?
Can it be done in the truck?
Has anyone done it and what are the procedures involved?
I believe that rear main is a 2 piece rigid seal. In my opinion and experience you can do it in the truck if you have proper lifting equipment. You can "roll " the seal in by removing the oil pan, loosening all the main bearing caps so the crankshaft will drop a fraction and removing the rear main bearing cap. HOWEVER you NEED advanced skills to do this. Its very easy to nick the seal as you push it into place. Its easy to have a bearing shell get out of position. You can ruin the motor if you are not careful. You will also need proper tools including a torque wrench. If you are a novice get experienced help with this fix. The repair is covered in all the usual books like Motors or Chiltons.
Good luck if you attempt it.....
The FE engines are very notorious for leaking out the back where the intake mates to the rear of the block, and every time, it masks itself as a rear seal problem.
The best way to check for a rear intake leak is to THOROUGHLY clean the rear of the intake, the backside of the block, the backside of the heads, and the top of the bell housing.
Use plenty of engine degreaser, especially on the backside of the block, and check for it being as dry as possible with rags. Having the back of the engine block as oil free as possible cannot be emphasized enough.
Once it is clean, take a drive. Check the back of the block, especially the seal at the rear of the intake.
If there is any wetness (where you made sure it was dry earlier) you have found your oil leak.
Post back what you find. There are some useful tips for R&Ring the intake.
Best of luck.
