My engine is running so rich I can smell gas in the cab while I'm driving it. It has a small backfire when I really get on it, and it has a serious lack of power. When I start it up, I have to rev it up to about 2k and slowly let the clutch out in order to get it moving.
I figured the carb needed to be adjusted. I also wanted to have the timing checked (I don't have a light) and have it smogged so I took it to a shop nearby. They said the intake manifold gasket and the lower carb heat riser gasket were both leaking and that was why it was running so poorly.
They also said the carb couldn't be adjusted. Is that true???
Would the leaking gaskets cause the engine to run rich?
Unless you have a severe exhaust leak AND a horrible rich condition, that gas you're smelling is probably a LEAK.
There's a cap over the idle mixture adjusting screw, but it can be popped off and there are SEVERAL other adjustments on the carb. They just figured you weren't going to pay them what they wanted to do all that work, so they told you enough to make you leave.
A small exhaust leak won't make the engine run badly in any way - just noisy.
If you don't want to rebuild the carb, just by a reman with a warranty and bolt it on. Make sure they say it's pre-adjusted, but try to get a book that shows HOW to do all the adjustments. A carb (rebuild) kit will definitely have the book (pamphlet).
