Engine Knock

I recently took my truck to my mechanic just for a regular check up since i just bought it, realiable guy i must add. He told me that I had a slight engine knock and that i would probably have to rebuild it in the next 50 to 100 thousand miles... I know thats a long ways off but there's only 92k on this truck, from what i've heard about the strait six there's people have driven these things to half a million with just regular oil changes... So what would cause this? I just aquired this truck so i'm not quite sure how the previous owners took care of it.

Thanks

Engine Knock

I think you just answered your own question with your last statement about the previous owners.

Also, 300's are long-lasting motors, but that doesn't mean every single 300 ever made will coast to 500k miles with just regular oil changes. There's going to be a few that are the exception rather than the rule as it pertains to long life.

The above comment was right on the money. The care given by the provious owners makes all the difference. I bought a 91 F150 with a 302, and E4OD. 120K. Lots of life left. By 150K it was time for a new tranny. By 180K I was swaping motors. With proper care, some motors will make it to the 400, or even 500K mark, but without, like yours, 100K may be it.

The 300 may be bulletproof, but not all of them last forever. Your's might make it to 100k and that might be it for it.

Another thing with the 300 though, once that slight knock turns to a severe knock, and it'll probably take a while longer than it would on most engines, it'll still "work"

Thats the sad truth. I have 83k and i think she's burning oil

Back when I was YAS (young n stupid), my 83 F150 with 300 I-6 had a slight knock. Started it up one day and the slight knock was downright loud...decided to drive it home anyway. Made it 90 miles then sent a rod out the side...only 10 miles from home. Moral: 300's will go and go and go...even when the operator is stupid enough to make them self destruct.
Monitor the knock with your buddy, treat it right, and start saving for a rebuild or a long block replacement. Just my 2 centavos.

Engine Knock

Knock could be:

Hidraulic lifter
Shell connecting rod
Rocker arm

You should check before it gets worse...

Engine Knock

my 83 F100 w/ the 300, it had a nice knock to it, around 2500- up, and she rattled when first started untill the oil pressure went up, now at around 22-2500 is when the knock started and it sounded like a diesel going down the road, at rebuild, I found that the upper rod bearings were toast, all showing copper, the lower rod bearing were fine, the lower main bearings were showing a bit of copper, (#3,4,5, and 7), IMHO, that was the case of my knock, and an annoying squeak, out of the lower half of teh engine
