Hey guy I know I am kinda going backwards from the norm but how difficult is it to go from 4wd to 2wd? Not sure the difference on how the axle is mounted. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated
Ok you deserve a more serious answer .. The 2wd has a twin I-beam suspension in the front with king pins, radius arms, and coil springs .. You'd have to find a donor vehicle to get those parts from and at that point you might as well get the whole frame .. Even the steering gear box and steering shaft are different .. I would just try to find a 2wd rolling chassis and switch the body over if that's what you want .. You could probably find a solid 2wd chassis for $400 - $500 .. I've heard offers on this forum before "It's free if you come and get it"
Its a bit of a long story. The main issue is that the po swapped in an international running gear and i believe transfer case. The gear ratio was different on the front and rear axles. I swapped in a nice rear axle from a ford but am having trouble finding a front one that isn't overpriced. Another concern is that the transfer case is different and the front drive shaft is bent. The axle i found is still on the donor truck so i could take all the necessary parts. I just thought this would be an easy solution for my problem but perhaps I was wrong
If the body is that good to keep, just buy a 2wd truck with a bad body and blown motor and swap it out. Then sale the 4wd running gear to make your money back. Sound like a PO cobbled up mess anyway.
It will be a long road to swap the 4wd front end components for 2wd ones. Parts like the complete twin I beam front suspension, steering box, transmission w/cross member.
If you have a 2wd parts truck setting next to it, it could be done. But a body swap to a 2wd chassis could be done in a weekend.
Have you put this idea out in your state FTE chapter to see if any one has a 2wd chassis setting around to maybe trade for a 4wd one??
