I have an 04 F350 that has apparently had a lot of bad luck. I paid $12,500 9 months ago. I think I got a good deal. It's a black crew cab short bed Lariat in nice condition with 200,000 miles with the 6.0L. I've spent $2500 in engine repairs.
Since then, there was an accident. My insurance company owes about $4,500 for some body work. A mechanic I took it to then damaged my hood and door, adding another $1,500 in body work.
Also, it won't currently start. It likely needs between $2,000 and $4,000 more to run again. (New injectors, maybe new heads)
My question is do I keep the truck or sell it. I've been offered $9,500 as it sits, not running, with body damage. If I don't spend the money to fix the engine or the body, I can save between $8,000 and $10,000. Let's call it $19,000 total, or way more than I paid for the truck.
On the other hand, if I keep it, the engine should run great, with a ton of new parts, new injectors, new HPOP, head gaskets, etc. And I would have almost an entirely new paint job.
If I sold it I would get another 6.0L Super Duty. It would probably have closer to 100,000 miles, but not a bunch of new parts, for basically the same cost to me.
You may want to have it properly diagnosed and see what it's really going to take to get it running again as it sounds like you are speculating on what it needs. Your in a tough spot though it sounds like you need to spend some money to decide wether you should spend even more money or dump it and start over. Then factor in the cost of an exorcism because it may be possessed. All kidding aside I think if I was able to financially I would start over if I were in your shoes.
You were able to find this one, so you'll find another, probably better one. I'm in the camp of take the $s and start your search -- that is a known at this point, what isn't known is what all will be discovered going into the motor. Maybe you can find a nice '06 or '07...
If you have to learn the hard way at least purchase one that has been bullet-proofed.
Funny enough I think my head gasket and oil cooler are still working fine. My heads might be cracked and I had to do just about everything else though.
I did expect when I bought it the injectors were nearly worn out, so I budgeted a couple grand for that. If I get another truck with 100k on it, those injectors are at least half used up. I also am finding very few for sale that claim to be bullet proofed, which seems odd.

Personally I'd take a stock one that has been properly maintained. Diff. people have diff. ideas on what bullet proofing is and a lot that have done it have also run tuners and beat the cr** out of them. It also makes a diff. on who did the bullet proofing and what mfg. they got the parts from. For example, would you want one that has vr and dorman parts in it? A good running stocker to me has a lot less ???'s attached to it.
That is a really decent amount of money for your truck in its current condition - I would jump at that offer. It may take a bit of time to find the right replacement. I would probably look for one from a private seller where you can get some records of the maintenance and repairs and find out about any modifications that have been done.
