I normally frequent the super duty page, but have always loved the older trucks. I'm fairly competent with mechanics and enjoy tinkering, but don't know too much about the older ones.
Anything to look for specifically other than the obvious? Things related to the 460 swap? 4wd issues? I live a mile from work and I often walk, no kids, so this would pretty much just be a toy.
look for cracks around the steering box. with the 460 swap it is alway a possibility that they used "car" exhaust mandifolds. when that happens part of the frame usally get cut out to make room for exhaust pipe. this weakens the frame but for a mud toy you could double the frame and make it stronger at the point. also look at the motor mounts and see how this was done. i have seen some really creative ways to make 460 motors fit these trucks. for example the ones on my 78. give it a real good once over. i think its a little high priced myself for that kinda money it should at least have a front bumper.
Looks nice .. Get the casting # off the heads .. The 72 stock heads were the only ones to steer clear of .. but if it was built the heads may have been replaced already .. It is a non A/C cab that would be something I would want and for resale that will eliminate some potential buyers .. Really check the underside well for rust .. It's a nice looking truck
Plug wires are fairly newish, oil fill cap is shiny clean, positive cable on battery is brand new, coolant is pooled on top of radiator, air filter is clogged.
Nothing in the ad shows that this guy has done or knows anything about his truck except what he can see or what he has been told and barely remembers.😁😣
I would go look at it as such, as start pointing out real problems and even make up some phantom stuff. If you can convince him that his muffler bearings are going out, im sure he will drop the price 1k.
I would guess, the PO did some work to it, and this guy just hammered it until it wasnt fun anymore.
Obviously do the whole walk around, crawl underneath, take it 4byin and check what the other guys posted
If i wanted it, i would go look at it, and a frown would develope on my face. I might offer him $2000-$2500. No one else is obviously interested, and the paint is probably over rust
Take a flashlight and crawl under the truck. Look for rust first off. I can see some in the pictures already. Wheel wells, floors, upper cab, cab supports, and the front of the bed are problem areas and somewhat of a pain to fix.
After that look for things that just don't look right. Lots of zip ties, odd looking bolts and extra washers. Parts missing and wires clipped. You will be looking at a truck that many people have worked on.
The guy is.. optimistic on pricing. I think 2,000-3,000 would be more fair for the truck.
This is exactly why i came here. I enjoy haggling and knowing these extras will help a lot. The valve covers say cobra, those clearly aren't from a truck correct?
What kind of mileage would i expect out of it? Similar to my v10 I'm assuming.
Talked to the guy today. He said the motor is from a 79 f250, not a 72, and it has flat top pistons, roller rockers, aluminum intake, and a 750 dual line Holley. He couldn't remember the size of the cam, and said the worst rust is on the floor pans.
What it comes down to after your best attempt at checking it over what are you comfortable giving for it knowing what you've found out about it .. If it were me I would want to know what heads are on the motor and do a compression test on it .. I'd also want to know how badly beat up is that front 1/2 ton axle running those 36 inch tires or did someone actually think it through and beef up the axle before putting those 36's on there .. At the end of the day it's your choice and your money ..
