When I was looking for a drop-in motor, one guy told me the early hpop's had a plastic drive gear. Was it BS just like almost everything else he said?
Josh will correct me on any mis-information, but the early pumps had a problem with the housing cracking and a specific part within the pump coming apart that prevented the pump from building pressure.
The reman pumps are sometimes cleaned up, the internals replaced, and sent back out. This doesn't always work out too well, so again, this is why people opt for the Diesel Site HPOP on the 03-04 trucks.
On the 05-07 trucks, the most you have to worry about is the STC fitting and Dummy plugs and stand pipes failing. Cheap replacements compared to having to replace the entire pump due to failure.

Yup, it was. No plastic drive gears. The late '04 engine used a different part number oil pump than the '03-early '04 but it was still a swashplate style pump and looks exactly the same on the bench. It also has a different (late model) part number ICP (although they seem to interchange ok). The '05 and up have the redesigned 4v piston pump (and the STC fitting). The early style pump is much more failure prone-both the ones that came in the truck and the rebuilds. I have a friend who had his changed 3 times before he got a good one. If the budget allows one of the more expensive aftermarket pumps could save some headache.
Still had to have a new HPOP. While taking it off the tech couldn't understand why it went out until he found silicone sealant. Evidently that's a big no-no. It seems it pushed the rings. And seals apart. They did warranty the pump but I did get hit with the labor.
hello to all.. just wanted to say i've been a long time reader and this is hands down the best place for 6.0 info. this site has helped me build my 2006 6.0 in to my dream truck. many thanks to all the regulars ( we all know who they are) for info and insight... now my dilemma...had ford install a reman hpop in 2014,that pump lasted until 3 weeks ago, about 80,000 miles, just had ford install another hpop under the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty 3 weeks ago. that pump failed with less than 3000 miles on it, its in the shop now (adrenaline pump being flown in as i type this). ford said they won't warrenty "this" pump as my warranty has just expired on the pump that they just replaced, i thought new part=new warranty...silly me... that's the main reason i've stayed with the oem pumps, i keep reading on here that's "it's a crapshoot" with the oems, but i did not know ford would'nt warranty it's own parts...what did i miss?

What year of truck are you having repeated HPOP failures on? Having HPOP failures on 05' and up are extremely rare let alone repeated failures. You would also benefit from starting your own thread.
Thanks guys, I hear ya, but it doesn't make sense to me. I've had a defective part installed, where's the warranty on that?Guess I misunderstood when I read "sometimes you go through 3 or 4" befor you get a good one. Didn't realize folks were paying each time. And...next time I'll start my own thread, I'm a lot better at reading posts than I am at posting... Thanks for the feedback
The warrenty is only good from the time of the first one you purchase and doesn't renew the warranty Period if it fails
Hope that makes sense
I call BS on that one, a new pump is a new pump, reman or not.
Warranty should start on installation date of EACH new pump, not from when the first reman was installed.
If we tried that trick at the implement dealership I used to work at they would have shut down years ago.
I can also guarantee the local Ford dealer here would not be doing that to customers.

Exactly!!!... That's what makes sense to me too... It's ok, been looking for a reason to get the Diesel Site pump anyways
The dealership I use thinks that's unfair also, so they're gonna help me out with the labor. Thanks for your input, I feel better now
Mustang_309, sorry for the slow reply. I'm new to this posting process. It's an 2006 F350 SRW CC 4x4 with 221,000. This is the third pump, first one at 149,000 , second one 3 weeks ago, and now... Less than 3000 miles on this one

I almost don't want to know, but how is your truck eating the newer V4 HPOP? The later V4 pumps are virtually indestructible unless you send something through it
Unless of course someone stuffed an '03 or '04 engine below your hood.
So only the early model reman pumps are suspect? I guess I never picked up on that. It's the original motor, with all the mods recommend on this site, this is the only problem I've every ever had with the truck. I travel a lot do to my line of work, so the truck is meticulously maintained. I'll get the core back this time so I can see (hopefully) what happened this time....
They keep equating it to a failed pump, sure. Without sufficient trouble shooting skills, very likely after reading about all the 03-04 failures, I'd lean toward a pump.
WatsonR: Hall ford in Newport News, they've been working on my truck since new. I realize that good 6.0 techs are hard to find, but I've always had confidence in this shop. I'll post the results of what I can figure out once I get this core back. Thanks for everyone's feedback, I have learned so much from this site, just wanted to say again .. Thanks to all of the members!
