number stamp

Hey fellas. I have a 400 block I am using to build a motor for my 1979 F250. I found a number stamped at the rear of the motor near the hgole for the oil pressure sender. It is 5H123567. Does anyone know what this number means? Its a 1974 400 block.Thanks

Is it cast (raised) or actually a "stamp"? If cast, then it's probably a foundry number.

And if it's a 1974 400 block then it wouldda come out of a passenger car like an LTD, County Squire, or other related behemoth.

No it is stamped. It is on the raised edge surrounding the little valley at the rear of the motor where the casting numbers are. Thanks

I was looking it over today and I found another number stamped into the front of the block, would be to the left of the timing gears. It is 4J240. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

4J24 - Block cast September (J) 24, 1974 (4) / O = Engine plant code.

A = January, M = December, the letter I is skipped.

Sorry.. no idea on the stamping. However, some rebuilders attach a tag. Perhaps a previous rebuilder used a stamp.

Thanks guys . My curiosity is killing me. I did not know the date code was on the front of the block. The other number , I just don't know. The block has been checked by a machine shop as being original bore sizes. We are going to bore it .030 over. Funny thing is , I have 2 other blocks, both 351m, but no stamps like this one has.
