I have a 2001 ford ranger. I was driving and all of the sudden the battery light came on and the check gauge light came on, and the truck just stopped moving. I was able to get it to a parking lot and now when I try to start it, it will start, but I have to constantly give it gas and it idles very bad, so I can't drive it. Anyone know what this could be? Please help
Sounds like an electrical connection problem, so begin with the basics. Turn the headlights & blower motor on High speed to load the battery, then using your multimeter on the 20vdc scale, measure battery voltage across the battery Posts.
If you have a lit CEL, scan the computer for trouble codes & post All code Numbers, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
If no codes stored & the under load battery voltage is ok, check Both battery cable to post connections, they need to be clean, bright & tight.
Check the B+ feed cable from the battery post to the underhood power distribution box for good connection there. Check the cable runs & connections for voltage drop with your multimeter. The battery B- connection to the engine & body also need to be clean bright & tight.
Check the computer power relay & its power distribution box sockets for corrosion or loose connections, if ok, swap the power relay for a like, known good one, like the AC power relay.
Some thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.
