It could be an issue, but I'm with madpogue, and I think it would be more of a problem getting the idm wet. If I ran a 6637, I'd make sure it had a wire mesh inside the filter and not just the filter. There are different brands, made different. Heard of someone sucking the filter into the turbo, one that did not have a wire mesh on the inside.
S&B makes a cold air kit, but much more expensive. It looks like the side is open, but the top is closed.
If getting the filter moist is a concern, the NAPA 2326 filter in my signature has the hydrophobic filter media and the dimensions are the same as the 6637. It's a bit pricy when it's not on sale, though. Regular is $144; I got it during their spring filter sale for about $36. It was hard to pass up at that price. It had a Duralite sticker on it inside the NAPA box, and the Donaldson number for the filter is B085046.
I don't even worry about my 6637 when I wash the batteries! I wash the top of them a couple times a year with soap and water, when I am done the filter is quite wet! and i start it up and drive it that way.
That gap is quite significant. As others have previously stated, I think the concern would be more about the IDM getting wet than the air filter. The "water-resistant" air filter numbers were already given, so I won't state them again.
You do have options with the air filter, but you might want to verify your IDM will not suffer due to excessive moisture conditions.
