I'm seeing some Excursions with digital climate controls and some with three *****.
It's looking like 2000-2001 models have the ***** and 2002+ have digital.
I've seen an odd 2001 with Digital and an odd 2002 with *****. Could this be a typo by the person selling?
Or is this an options thing where Limited have Digital and XLT have *****?
Optional equipment, my '05 XLT has the *****. The two systems are very different and not easily swapped around, from several members here who have investigated a digital upgrade in the past.
Was there a certain options package that had the digital contols?
Are the digitals particularly problematic?
Do the digitals require any interaction with the PCM?

I'm thinking you are seeing the 2000 (perhaps 2001) Limited Models then...
I don't think the EATC (Electronic Automatic Temperature Control) system was available in the early production year(s).. But, I'm sure somebody will correct me shortly for sticking my neck out too far..
Standard on XLT`s is standard climate control (the 3 *****). Standard on the Eddie Bauer's and Limited's is ATC (Auto Temperature Control). Not sure if XLT`s could be had with ATC. my 02 XLT Premium (a step below the limited) has standard climate control.

The digital climate controls came standard on all 2002-2005 Limited Excursions and 2003-2005 Eddie Bauer Excursions. XLT's and XLS's never had the option for it.
Prior to 2002 all Excursions came with the manual controls.
I really like my Digital controls, no issues with it. I had the same type of control in my old explorer so its familiar to me.
I always was content with the "bold school" *****, until...
Now, I like to pick a specific temp and let the EATC do the rest. No more having to increase the fan speed in the sun, or slow it down in the shade - let technology work for me.
Let's me stare at the purty '08+ mirrors and ALL the cars in them...
A little off topic but I saw it said somewhere that the outside temp on the overhead lie-o-meter worked properly on the Ex's worth the 3 *****, but not in the Ex's with the digital controls. I was just wondering because my overhead always reads -40 but the outside temp EATC control works fine. Sorry for the hijack.

My DD sets everything I understand what you are talking about but I have to lower/raise the settings occasionally (rarely) and when I am in the EX it is a treat (for me) to play with the settings.
It reminds me of the old climate controls that used a cable to move the flap.
my '02 Overhead console does not show temp since my digital display shows outside temp. my old '00 and '04 xlt with manual ***** showed temp up top though...never had an issue with any of them.
