This is an exhaust question, but it is 73 - 79 specific. I know alot of you have probably made the same swap so maybe someone can offer some advise.
I am swapping out a 300 six for a 351-W. The 351 is almost ready to drop in, just got to get a carb for it, then the next weekend I'm off it'll be in.
Which headers will fit the easiest? long or short tube? and are there any clearance problems that I should look out for?
Hard to tell. Your safest bet is to test fit the 351W and check for clearances on steering rod, suspension components, starter, etc. Then research the dimensions on various types of headers( full length, shorties, equal length, block huggers). This way you'd increase the likelihood that the headers would fit and you wouldn't have to send them back, order new ones, hope those fit.... yadda-yadda...
Sorry I don't have a definite, slam-bang answer for you but it's a guesstimate without actually being there and seeing the fitment of the 351W transplant.
Shouldn't be too difficult to resolve though... Good luck!

Clean,
One of the biggest problems I have had with headers is the tranny cooler lines. Be prepared to either wrap the header or the cooler lines. Starter is next. If you can rig a heat shield it will save you some money over the years.
I've never run shorties on a truck but they seem to be an optimal solution. I run full length headers. I usually have to jack the motor up to sneak them in.
Your best bet is to call a local performance exhaust shop. They will give you your options and what mods maybe required for your specific application.
I am a big fan of Hedman headers.
