Yes, the engine will tick (clack) loudly without oil. You should not be driving it that way, or you will destroy the engine.

Did you lose an oil drain plug? That would be on the bottom of the oil pan.

Did you drive over something that punctured the oil pan? Again look closely at the pan.

Did the "Check Engine" light come on when this happened?

Also, might I suggest punctuations? Your run-on sentences are kind of hard to read.

So last night i got under the ranger, checked the pan and there wasn't a single mark on it. Checked the drain plug it was in there nice and tight. Everything looked fine. Getting frustrated i went and bought oil filled it and there was no leak. So now i know it needs to be under pressure for it to leak. So i started the truck it started totally fine looked under neath to find that what i believe is the oil sending unit spewing oil everywhere.

I've seen that happen before. It's worked fine for all its life and one day it just decides to let go. Glad you found it, and it was a simple problem to solve. Hopefully you did not damage your engine too much while it was leaking.

Oil leak

There's a pretty good chance that there will be no engine damage. Last summer my Escort started to lose oil pressure, as indicated by the warning light coming on. I drove it for a couple days until I investigated whether it was a faulty gauge or true oil pressure loss.

I found there was virtually no oil pressure nor flow at higher rpm, and then found the oil pickup screen clogged. After correcting the problems, the car's been running great ever since.
