77 f100

Hey guys. Im in a bit of a pickle. I've got a 77 f100 i6, 3 in the floor that I'm havin issues with. I get up to about 35-40 MPH and my engine sputters and shuts off. One time it did this I had water pour out of the bypass on my radiator. It almost seems like it's overheating but I'm not exactly mechanically inclined so any help would be awesome

That's not exactly an excuse for overheating your motor .. Make sure radiator is topped off .. and make sure you have a way to accurately measure the temperature of the motor and don't drive it until you know for sure or you can do irreparable harm to the motor .. Solve the possible high temp issue 1st then we will talk about sputtering and shut down ..

One option .. You should be in 180*F to 210*F range without doing harm

It's going to depend on the outside temp and volume of coolant .. 80*F day with a 3 core radiator you should be at normal operating temperature in about 4 minutes .. What kind of gauge are you measuring temperature ?

I have a 79 F100 I6 with 3 on the floor. Had similar issue once. Found it was small vacuum leak. I am no expert but maybe worth checking out.

Could be plugged fuel filter causing the stumble. Overheating is another issue.

Overheating and surging/dying sound like unrelated problems to me.

The overheating could be something as simple as low fluid or a stuck thermostat. Throw a new(correct) t-stat at it and top it off with new fluid. Make sure to properly 'burp' the coolant system when filling the radiator.

The engine dying or cutting out could me a multitude of problems. It could be a carb in need of being rebuilt. Floats might be sticking or sinking. Jets could be clogged up.
Check your fuel filter or replace it with a new one. The filters are dirt cheap so you might as well while you are there. If the filter is dirty, it could be getting enough fuel to idle, but not flow enough for actual driving.
Put a timing light on it and make sure its at least close to correct timing. Somehow you might have the timing off in a way that makes it able to idle, but not run strong.

How does the engine respond when you flog it? Does it stumble or die when you do this?
