My 84 6.9 just got a little more temperamental. Not sure how many miles are on the current setup, but she smokes pretty good when first started so I know I'm in for new injectors. But now it started to have little/no response when stepping on the skinny pedal. If I pump it a couple times it'll build rpm's and power and run normal and well for as long as I'm on it. When I let off the pedal it'll wind down normally then almost die just before settling into normal idle rpm's and idle just fine until I attempt to go again and the process starts over.
My question is could further deterioration of the injectors cause this phenomenon or does my pump have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel...... or should I be looking elsewhere ?
sticking metering valve by the sound of it. IP / injectors should always be replaced together, with the exception of something failing early, ie. IP goes out after 30k or losing an injector at 10k.
Try running some ATF through it and a strong dose of diesel kleen.
Ive had good results with the combo. Dump the filter, fill with merc / dex. Start it up until it starts running a little off (atf in the pump and lines) Shut her down and let it set over night or weekend. Double dose the tanks with diesel kleen and hope for the best. Mine has a sticky MV too, helps alot, but have to repeat every so often. In reality, pump needs gone through / rebuilt. But this will get you by for a little while.
Update: 5 seconds after the ATF hit the IP, it was as good as new. Then I let it soak for a couple days. Not a hiccup when i took it out today...... we'll see how long the quick fix lasts. Thanks for the help !
Ok, new diesel owner question here...
ATF in the fuel tank?
My 6.9 "bogs" down right off idle until the clutch is fully engaged, then it runs like normal. Even in neutral, when I push the go pedal the engine bogs.
Will the ATF trick help until I figure the real issue?

Sounds like an IP issue to me, so sure. Drop the fuel filter, fill with some merc /dex and spin it on. Let run a few seconds to get the ATF in the system and let it sit a while.

How long sitting for good results? Two hours, two days, two weeks? . And just plain old standard ATF?
And, hey Lowkey, thanks for this post! Great timing!
