Starter Problem

Starter Problem

Wow, this post restoration debugging just keeps throwing stuff at me. THE BIG car show in town that I have been working so hard to get to was today.
So I get up early so I can get a spot in the shade, fire the Merc up and that's when my latest bug appeared. Yup the starter hangs up on the flywheel. So I crawl under and remove it and everything seems free enough?? Back in and it hangs up again but off I go. A way down the road it releases. Great.
Great show with over 500 cars/trucks and I win something. Go to leave and the same thing all over again but this time it is hung up all the way home.
Any helpful suggestions to fix this problem ?? What should I look for ?

Check that the bolts are tight. Do you have the support that goes to the oil pan at the front of the starter?

Yup, the bolts are tight Ross and I do have the front support that bolts to the oil pan. I got a little bit of something yesterday with the starter now that I have sat back and thought about it.
A hang up this morning that came free after a bit. The way home it never did get off the flywheel. I'll pull the starter tomorrow and look it over for any burs or marks. Then reinstall and tighten everything.
Was working fine up until now?

I've never figured out why my Y Block starter hangs. Mine usually hangs when bumping the engine. I'll hit it and then it won't bump the engine again. It's a PITA but I just take out the ole Ball peen, pop it a couple of times and then it'll work for a while.
I know I'm not helping but these ole trucks can be cantankerous.

You really can't run it with the drive still engaged, it's got to be ruined. I'd be surprised if the starter shaft isn't worn out from the friction and lack of lubrication. I'd pull it out, disassemble, clean and lube. If the Bendix is broken or worn, replace it.
