Hey everyone! I'm posting what is probably another stupid question but I want to know for sure before I spend money I don't have. I have a 93 F-250 7.3 turbo diesel, 2wd 3.55 gears open diff real nice truck 216000 miles and it runs really really rough. when I try and start it after its been sitting for 8 + hours or so it cranks for a about 7 seconds and then finally starts, and puffs a lot of white smoke. when I start to drive it whether its its at 188 degrees (normal operating temp) or ice cold it puffs black smoke on acceleration and then stops while im driving. new lift pump, glow plugs controller and ip were replaced within last 2 years. injectors no idea and is 188 degrees the right temp for my truck?
I'm going to say yes. Rough running, white smoke is definitely injectors.
Black smoke on acceleration, however, means you are over-fueling your engine, which is caused by one of two things:
1. Timing is retarded. If you are injecting fuel too late in the cycle, the 'appropriate' amount of fuel can't be burned properly.
2. The pump is 'turned up' too much, and needs to be adjusted down. See the stickies for how.
I'd replace the injectors, then check your timing. Once you've got a good set of injectors in there, and your timing is correct, then you can play with the fuel screw -- if you don't smoke at all, you may be able to turn it up. If you smoke quite a bit under acceleration, turn it down.
Mind you, our diesel engines can run extremely lean, and do -- unlike a gasoline engine which keeps a constant fuel/air ratio, our diesels just lean out the mixture until the engine keeps at a given speed(controlled by the governor or pedal). This is why you don't see any smoke unless you're accelerating hard -- even if the timing is off, you aren't adding enough fuel to go beyond what can be burned in the given time.
yup id agree.the ones in chip truck were just about as bad as your description.the recent ones i just pulled today in log truck were not far behind either.she'll come alive with a tune up.keep us posted.
really? cause that would be great my truck is slower than malasis and has like no power at all it takes almost the whole petal to get up to speed. and ford a diesel tune up do I just need injectors? the glow plugs, controller, injection pump and lift pump are all new or newer. thanks for your help guys!
Once you have the injectors in, you need to get the timing as perfect as you can get it -- too retarded and you smoke, have less power. Too advanced and it's clattery, and you also have less power.
