With the 460 I'm putting in my halfton I would like to spice it up a bit. I've decided on a Weiand Stealth intake but the cam choice is still up for grabs. I've been looking into Lunati and am very impressed and a friend suggested a comp ***** thumpr. Anyone deal with any lunati or that thumper? Thanks!
I personally really like the comp extreme 4x4 grinds, they build very good power down low to get a big heavy truck moving. My 460 has an X4 256/262, .514 lift, performer rpm, headers, porting, 750 edelbrock on top and is 9.5:1.
According to engine analyzer it should be around 430 horse, 500 tq, but the real story is the torque curve, over 400 by 2000 and peak is at 4500. HP peak is 5500. I actually had real head flow numbers to put in, so the computer estimate should be pretty close.
I do not have a lumpy idle, but I can drift a truck on 44's in 4x4 while bouncing off the rev limiter... LOL
No, it is not a 4x4 only cam, they are designed to build big off idle torque and big torque throughout the rpm range while still building good vacuum.
Throttle response with my particular build is nothing short of amazing, especially considering I am horribly mis-geared and am turning 44's with 4.10's.

Those thumper cams are made for their sound. If that is a priority for you, then run one of them, but like the others said it's not ideal for the max pulling power for your engine.

If you already have the Weiand, no problem - it's a nice piece. But even better is the Torquer II. Also, regarding cam choices, have a custom grind done. Why buy a universal fit cam when you can have a custom ground cam for about the same money. Go to this site 460 Ford Forum - and post about your build, or go to Scotty's site Re in"Car"nation High Performance - Home and/or other professional engine builder and let them spec the proper cam.
They will get all your info (intended use, truck weight gearing, compression, etc.) and get you the proper cam.
PS. Any duration over 226 degrees (at .050" lift) is going to be too much. IMO.
As has been said, the thump comes at a cost. In this case the exhaust valve opens when there is still significant pressure in the cylinder, thereby creating a thump. But, that's wasted power.
Also, be wary of the Weiand intakes. Apparently they have just shifted their production to China and I may have gotten one of the first for a 400 and it is unusable as it has a flange in the front that covers one of the thermostat housing bolt holes. I don't know if all the manifolds have that problem or that production of all of them has been sent to China. But watch out as things appear to have got to pot.

For OP information, that Comp Cam is 210 Int., 218 Exh. duration (at .050" lift). A good choice.

It won't allow me on either site for some reason. And I'm not sure if I need a custom cam
