The Direct drive solenoid influences the shifts for 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear, I believe is what he's saying.
Maybe he was, but if it was what he was saying he's wrong.
The TorqShift really has six gears. For the most part fourth isn't used and the trans shifts 1-2-3-5-6.
The direct solenoid is used for the 3-5 shift. It holds, but does nothing else for the 5-6 shift. It is not used in 1, 2, 3, or 4.

The 2-3 shift is performed by the overdrive and intermediate clutches. The overdrive solenoid releases the overdrive clutch as the intermediate solenoid applies the intermediate clutch. The direct solenoid is snoozing during this shift.

I'm wondering that, too. This transmission is so difficult to tune that I always suspect the tunes when I see an issue like this.

Mark,
Thanks for the input.
Van is running VERY well now. Haven't done a thing other than drive it.
Nice firm shifts, and right when it's supposed to shift, even under a pretty good acceleration.
But... With my foot to the floor it won't shift past 55 mph (whatever gear that is, I can't count fast enough). Just revved like it popped out of gear. Took several seconds to find a gear and then on I went.
Even after that it's shifting fine with normal driving.
All part of the adaptive learning strategy?
Whatever it is I'll keep an eye on the filters and just plan on a rebuild as soon as I can. I know that gray sludge wasn't good.
Thanks for the description of the 5R110 shifting, it's starting to make sense how the thing works.
Why is 4th gear not used (for the most part?)
And is the "6th gear" just the torque converter locking? (as in you count one of the shifts when the tc locks earlier in the shifting.) ??
The TorqShift is really two transmissions in one case. The front trans is a two speed and the rear is a three speed. Three times two gives six gears. By the way the ratios worked out 4th gear is 1.09:1 and 5th gear is 1:1. Those two ratios are too close to ever be used together. It is always one or the other. When the trans is colder than 0F it shifts 1-2-3-4-6. Above 0F it shoift 1-2-3-5-6.

No, 6th gear is a separate gear ratio. I didn't cover the torque converter locking at all. That can happen in 5th or 6th gears.
The whole sequence is usually 1-2-3-5-6-lock. If you pay really close attention you should be able to feel 5 shifts including the torque converter lock.

If you are too fast to kickdown to 3rd gear there is a small window of speed where a kickdown will shift to 4th instead of 5th. This will give more torque to the wheels. From 4th it can only shift to 6th or 3rd.
Curious to know what you find. Mine did the same thing on. 3/4 throttle acceleration. RPMs up and down, felt like it couldn't find a gear. My 04' and 06' both had the flare.
