seeing the headlight bucket thread made me think of this...
any experts out there on frenching headlights on a 53-56 ??? I know you can buy kits... but what is involved in diy I've got a spare set of buckets, bezels and stuff...
anyone give me the info on it ???
thanks
john (too cool for bulging bulbs, but too cheap to buy them)
John, I've thought of trying to french the headlights on my 54. My brain keeps telling me to figure out how to use 56 headlight rings, of which I have a spare set. If it seems to work I'll let you know. Kurt y-blocks rule!
I thought you had to change the sheet metal panel behind the head lights to the 56 style in order to french the lights? 53-55 were flat, in 56 they have the curve to fit the deeper lights.
I wanted the same thing. But the only solution I could come up with was to change out the air deflectors, gravel guard, blinkers and grill. It's all in now looks great. Good luck, John
I'm running the Fairlane front tilt... and the air deflector is made in the '56 style... but why would that matter ?? isn't the frenching done inside the bucket with the bucket in the same position ??
I'm clueless here so someone enlighten me please !
The headlight buckets on the 56 are about 1" deeper than they would be on the 53-55. So that is why the indentations are necessary. Some guys have been known to just cut out a little window in each air deflector. By frenching your lights, you will have to resess in the buckets and then find a smaller version of the 56 headlight rings. I wonder what it would look like if you just mounted your stock rings inside the grill bucket in the reversed position? Oh well, Good luck, John
I think "moi" can be translated from the original freedom language to "me" in English. Does that sound correct, Peter?
And what's wrong with an insect-like front grille? Haven't you ever seen a bug-eye Sprite? A real collector item and quite stylish, if I may say so. Quite stylish even if I may not say so.
Now you guys stop freedom-kissing your headlights and get back to work on your trucks. Otherwise, you'll have to sit in the corner.
Correctomuno, George. Somewhere there is a period snapshot of self at the NY Auto Show in a Sprite. In the pic was a flattopped Himmelberg in a checked sports coat... looking rather stylish and probably of an age to be thinking alot about freedom kissing.
John... am not nuts about the non stylish bugeyed look on my truck either. Have seen a pic of freedomed headlights in an older mag... not much help. Don't freedomed lights install from the rear? As from the fender well of your 49 Merc? The answer lies here. Best Himmelberg
