Turbo Boost?

OK I have to admit that when I bought my 6.0 I was a TOTAL diesel novice.

But now after running into one of spinto's bad diesel mechanics, I now know my 6.0 inside and out.

Now that mine is running well, I am curious, about these turbos...

How much boost pressure should I expect to see from the stock turbo?

What variables affect the amount of boost I can expect to see?

What does the VGT cycle really tell you about the turbo operation?

What can be done to increase turbo performance without a new or modified turbo?

And the fun stuff...my stock turbo gets me about 27 lbs of boost a WOT and seems to sit at about 5-7 lbs when cruising on the highway...what are yours doing?

28 pounds of boost is the most you want to see on an engine that doesn't have head studs, once you push past 28 pounds you are running the risk of stretching the torque to yield head factory head bolts and blowing a head gasket. The VGT cycle just tells you what the PCM wants out of the turbo, at 85% the vanes are closed as far as they will go and at 15% they are open as far as they will go, and a number of variables go into why the PCM commands the VGT% to a certain value. When the vanes are in the closed position it makes the turbo act like a smaller turbo and improves turbo response at low engine RPM's where the exhaust gas flow is lowest. Also the stock turbo is plenty fine on an unmodified engine and with the tunes you would run on an non studded engine.

I was always curious about the VGT and what it was telling me...thanks!!

Since Monster has been rebuilt from the block up with new HG and studs, I'm not worried about too much boost...more interested in what to expect from the stock turbo and what I might be able to squeeze out of her. My budget is tapped out and then some...

I'm also curious what others are seeing from their stock turbos...is anyone getting over the 27-28 lbs of boost from the stocker?

Usually on a stock truck it would indicate sticking vanes, trucks that sit a lot are more prone to this, that is where the saying "drive it like you stole it" comes from. I seen 32 psi on my. Stocker and that with blue puffs of smoke it was time for a rebuild or a new one.

As soon as I put a trailer on mine with what would be referred to as the "unlimited tow" tune, I was hitting 35-36 psi on mine. It would throw codes and pull power. You don't want to do this on your stocker, it's bad. Took me some time to research and figure out why and finally concluded the turbo vanes were sticking. It seemed like everything was in order for the most part, but it would rear its ugly head when towing or in a hot program. Instead of a rebuild I chose to go the Powermax route and upgraded to Gearheads SRL+ P-max files. Very awesome!
