Later this week I will be pulling an instrument cluster out of a 1958 Ford F-700 with a heavy duty 292/312 that has the tach in it. I am wanting to put it in a 1960 Ford F-250 4x4. Will I need to pull the distributor out of the 58 to make the tach work in my 60? Thanks for any help in advance.
My bad. Never heard of that. Learn something new everyday. I would love to see a picture. Driven off the dizzy with a cable? Interesting.
Thats why my username is what it is. Ignorance is bliss and I'm a happy man.
Nothing bad about learning something new, I try everyday. The early 55-56 T Birds used a similar system. It works just like a speedometer cable between the distributor and the tach.
If you can, get the distributor and the cable too. Then you should have everything you need to install the mechanical tach in your truck. If both engines are Y-Block's it should swap right in.
You will need the tach drive distributor for the tach to work. When you get the distributor from the F700, make note of the vacuum lines from the body of the distributor to the carburator - they are for the governor and you will not need them. Just cap those connections. Another issue can be the vacuum advance, the distributor may not have one. I have seen tach drive distributors for the 292 and the big Y blocks that were mechanical advance only.
