Thanks. The pan hasn't been dropped in a long time. I have drained the pan a couple of times in the last 12k miles. I want to see what is in the pan. There is 178k on the clock with the original trans.
What about RWD? Some sites show a different filter.

Doesn't matter, the filter (more like a screen) doesn't need to be changed unless the trans gave out and needs to be rebuilt, just like Mark posted above.
RWD, 4x4, none of that matters. All you need to know is the pan on your truck is an OEM Ford, deep trans pan.

Yes, there are a bunch of people on FTE that have his transmissions. Most have them listed in their sigs, like I do.
Like I said, what do you want to know? I'd be happy to answer whatever questions you have, if I can, but you gotta ask them first.

I think you've answered my question. Basically I wanted to know if he was a straight up guy. If you get what you pay for when you buy one of his transmissions. I have not had the best of luck in the past. That's it.

He is a very straight up guy. He stands behind his transmission builds as well as his labor.
I've driven the 9+ hours to his shop a couple times to have him work on my Excursion and my F250. I haven't been down there in a couple years now, but I still talk to him on the phone every-so-often whenever I have questions.

Call John's shop and ask to speak with him if he isn't the one answering the phone. Pick his brain and ask him about his builds and what you want. If he's not absolutely slammed, he will usually take a few minutes and is more than happy to answer any questions you have.
If you call and have to leave a message on his voice mail, drop my name and tell him I suggested you call him so as to alleviate any fears you may have.

I've spoke to him. I need to save up for an econobuild. I didn't drop the pan today. I didn't like the color of the fluid that I drained. The mechanic said it might be better to just drain and replace fluid. I agreed. It was pretty dark even though I drained it twice in the last 12k miles. I'm on borrowed time.
Ah...gotcha. Now I understand better why your inquiries were of a vague nature. You were trying to get a better feel for his rep more so than you were asking about his transmission builds.
John has an excellent word-of-mouth reputation built upon years of satisfied customers who post on internet forums from across the US, as well as from customers from foreign countries too.
Guys like John, Brian at BTS, Clay at Riffraff, Joey at Terminator Engineering, Jody at DP-Tuner, Bob Riley at DieselSite, etc, etc, continually put the "service" in customer service.
You do not have to worry about John Wood. He is that good, and he will take care of you. I have first-hand experience with this.

Are you only draining the pan or flushing the system? There is a couple of How to Flush's in the tech section by Mark K. Also 1975Stroppebaja has a few more pictures. What fluid are you using? Specifically brand?
