BLOWN SPARK PLUG QUESTION

I had the #10 plug blow last month. Today the #9 blew. UUUGGG.

Anyways, truck is on the side of the road. Can I safely drive it without doing further damage etc? I would like to get it home while I research mechanics (I fell like I was overcharged last time).

I will call for a tow if driving will increase damage/risk or if it is a risk to myself.

HELP?

unplug the injector and COP and you will be ok to get it to where you have to go, it will be down on power and you will get a CEL and a very noisy ride.

Squeeze the release tab and pull the plug straight off

A bit of research shows disconnecting those may be beyond the scope of my mechanical abilities!

So if I disconenct that electrical attached to the injector (no tools required) I am good to go? Do I need to take the COP off, or can I just leave it in place?

Interesting what you say about having the plugs re-torqued - the last mechanic said to leave them all alone forever unless the truck miss-fires. Said not to touch them unless absolutely necessary. Man I hate miss-information from mechanics...

Misinformation is what you got. Stay as far away from that mechanic as possible. Plugs that are properly removed and properly installed rarely have problems. Yes, the head should have been designed differently. But plugs that are properly installed into an undamaged head do not blow out. Plugs that are improperly installed cause problems because of the head design.

Hi DavidB, thanks for your response. I both agree and disagree with your comment.

*IF* all plugs had been installed on my truck perfectly, I would agree with it. If they were installed properly all these years, I would say, yes, check them all, but the problem is the truck is 14 years old. Many owners. I have no idea of knowing what the threads are like for the rest, and with two blow-outs, I can assume that more will occur, making me want to stay far away from those threads which are possibly messed up.

You also note that when done properly there are rarely problems. I have to wonder about that. I have seen MANY stories where this has occurred with factory installed plugs. (Yes I suppose it is possible that those were installed incorrectly also, but seems less likely).

I have also heard at least one story where a person had a blown plug occur on that had been done before he bought his brand new truck! His mechanic found an insert. This guy was the original owner, meaning the repair was done when the vehicle was brand new!

What a stupid scary problem.
