Oil Level Info?

About 1000 miles ago I changed my oil and filter. It was my first time I did it myself and so far I think everything went good because it is running like it should. However I have a quick question, I know the oil capacity is 15 quarts for the max fill line on the dipstick. I added 14 quarts and saw it was a little below the max line. Is that alright I did that? Or should I go add some more oil. The guy at autozone said it was fine but i hear the dipstick isn't very accurate. I hope my engine isn't getting damaged.

That is where I run mine.

Why? So I can catch a leaking injector putting fuel into the crank case. Not that I'm hoping for one to take place, but there have been many stories of folks changing their oil and find their 5 gallon bucket over fills!

You're fine.

I use 15 qts. but you're fine with 14. There's also a low oil marker that's there for a reason. I'm comfy with 15 some with 14. Enjoy the truck and don't sweat the little stuff. You'll find out the longer you have the truck what's important.

Yet another difference with the IDI. If an IDI isn't leaking oil, you better check it because it's probably out.

I don't know what an IDI is but my truck doesn't leak any or burn any noticable amount between 5,000 mile changes. Sounds like maybe you should be driving something else.

I am. The IDI is the grandfather of these trucks. IDI stands for indirect injection. Ford sold a 6.9 L naturally aspirated diesel followed by a 7.3. These were mechanical injection pumps with no computer what so ever. They leaked oil terribly.

I learn something everyday. I don't think anything ever leaked as bad as the two stroke Detoit diesels that we had when I was in the army. They used almost as much oil as they did fuel but you never had to change the oil, Just keep adding and every so often change the filter. Guess that's one benny of getting old vrs. not getting there.

Ain't that the truth. We always had to top off the oil everyday.

Glad I stumbled upon this, as I have an Oil Change coming in about 1k & it always seems as if its a tad too full @ 15
Think I'll fill to 14 next time & see how closely to full it reads, replaced my Dip-Stick recently so I could read it better (yes w/oem & its exactly the same length).
BTW...My 6.0 doesn't burn or leak any oil whatsoever

If I recall, Benny runs 13 1/2 quarts.

At 14 quarts, my dip stick reads just a tad above half.

But, you run that expensive oil, so it might read higher than my cheap stuff.

LOL. I have been considering dropping to 13.5 to save money (jk) and to get rid of the hanging drop (that never seems to drop).
