In trying to find out why my instrument lights don't turn on, I have discovered that the spring that acts as a rheostat around the headlight switch is broken. It looks like I'm going to need a new headlight switch assembly. Does anyone know if this is available anywhere?

What are you referring to as 'it'? The switch or the resistor spring?
It's the resister spring that goes around the switch. The headlights will turn off and on and the inside dome light also works. The only thing that is out are the lights in the instrument cluster.
Reach behind the dash and there is a small button on the switch body that needs to be depressed in order to withdraw the **** and rod. The ya can undo the bezel to remove the switch from the dash.
D3ZZ-11654-A (replaced C5DZ-11654-A - C5TZ-11654-A & B & C - C8UZ-11654-A - D1ZZ-11654-A) .. Headlamp Switch Kit (Motorcraft SW-1245-kit) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.
Despite the 1973 Mustang part number prefix (D3ZZ), this switch does not fit 1973 Mustang.
No internal parts of the switch can be replaced. And IMO, buying a switch at a junkyard is a waste of time, as it may be no better than what you have now.
