new steering wheel install quest.

I have a 78 f150 and want to change the steering wheel, I want to install a quick release on it. Do I need to order both the hub adaptor and the quick release hub adaptor or just the quick release hub adaptor?

I have to ask just one question, why do you want a quick release steering wheel?

Ani theft or think its cool?

You can get a QD collar from a race car shop or mail order from Summit or Jegs and then get it PROFESSIONALLY spline cut (machinist shop if possible) or VERY PROFESSIONALLY welded to your existing steering shaft.

And then get what ever steering wheel will bolt to it. This sounds like a bad idea for a DD on public roads IMO if done wrong.

Hate to be a negative nelly on your first post...welcome to FTE, be safe and do it right if you just have to do it.

I have one on my hillbilly rig that is strictly off road, it was installed by the PO for some odd reason. It has been welded to the stock 73 Bronco steering shaft.

If you are wanting security, try this Grant Steering Wheels

I had that on my first Mustang that I drove to work in Long Beach. The car was broken into once but since it could not be driven away, it was left with the door cracked open. At the time, there were 40000 employees at the plant over three shifts and we were losing two or three cars a month

actually there are a few reasons for wanting the quick release. yes one is the security another is I want a black and red one that is thicker also I want the option of being able to change if I later want a different one without having to find my wheel puller. I wouldn't exactly consider it a dd but I am curious as to what safety concerns there are with the quick release as I will be using some on the highway.

Also it will make it much easier when I redo my dash. I plan to replace the factory gauges with aluminum and install my gauges in the Al. I see you have the 460 4spd. this is the engine swap I have just finished. its not quite finished but very close. there was a problem with the oil pump rod being to short for the hei style distributor.

Ah ok on your other reasons....lol. I just do not think that a QD one will have that finished look when you install the coupler that's all. My steering wheel puller is always in the bottom of the roller TB.

Safety...as long as the coupler is installed properly it should be safe enough, they use them in all sorts of racing, right? So it should be safe, just as long as it is not no hack weld job.

It's a 1 min deal to pull a steering wheel come dash work time, because I know where my steering wheel puller is where I left it, bottom drawer of the roller TB.

I'm running a stock distributor and have not heard of that issue. Have you posted that question in the eng appropriate forums?

Besides being practical, some mods are just cool to have.

If you do it, take lots of pictures and notes and post 'em up

i didn't realize anything needed to be welded. maybe I'm not grasping the overall concept of what needs to be done in order to swap out steering wheels. What would you suggest in order to go from a factory steering wheel to the six hole momo style steering wheel? I'm not really interested in the 3 hole grant style.

I am sure there is some adapter so you can trick out your truck with a MOMO color combo color steering wheel...lol

You need to see who sales (maybe MOMO) an adapter to fit onto your existing splined sheering shaft, I am sure there is someone, maybe Grant?

Lots of tuner cars out here in Los Angeles have removeable steering wheels, nothing new.

I would bet there is a bolt on adaptor for it.

i wish i had a camera because when i started this project a year and a half ago the truck was a complete pos, now its starting to look pretty good. the engine and lift kit look good anyway the body still is in bad shape. i don't know how to do body work but i will try anyway. my wife has a camera and i will try and get her to take some pic for me. i have a couple of pic of the engine i will try and find them.

i have found an adaptor but i didn't know it needed to be welded, if i have the adaptor can i just remove the 6 bolt if i want to take off the wheel, or will it still require the wheel puller?

That adapter fits quite a few wheels if you measure the bolt pattern/circle from the wheel to the adapter, not just Grant's wheels

I would say welding is the an option, but I like the spline and nut method. Once you weld that adapter on to ever go back to OEM set up you will have to replace the complete inside steering shaft.
