Engine sizes.......

Hi guys,

Anyone know the different engine sizes I can install in my 1960 F100 without any modifications to the engine bay or frame ?

I currently have a 292 Y , I believe a 350 Windsor will fit as well.

Thanks guys in advance.

Richard

Without mods to the engine bay or frame only another y-block (272, 292 etc) can be bolted in.

The 351W uses side engine mounts. Your engine uses a front engine mount as well as mounts on the bell housing, correct?

Lots of other engines will "fit", but modifications must be made for engine mounts and transmissions as well as all the cooling, exhaust, controls, accessories etc.

Several "bolt in" motor mount kits available? All the other stuff kills ya unless you get it from same engine.

Thanks for the info gents.

So in your opinion/experience what is the best replacement engine to put in one of these trucks ??

It's just for fun, running around, dog park, etc

Thanks

As much as I am enjoying my 429, I would not recommend it. Its a very tight fit, & some sacrifices had to be made. Not to mention, it SUCKS GAS!!!

I would say the most popular is the 351W. 302 is the same bolt up, with less power.

Lots of aftermarket stuff for 302 available. 302 Engines available and inexpensive. Still gotta be rebuilt unless you know how the motor was taken care of and need a trans to mate up. Drive-shaft, yoke, exhaust.etc etc... I rebuilt my 223 and it wasn't cheap but it bolted right back in. Lots of options for you but my advice is do your homework and make a list of everything you need and everything that can go wrong for new motor and rebuilding your current motor. Decide if you want truck for daily driver and comfort or just to fool around on weekend. Compare lists and do whats right for you.

Given the size of the engine compartment, with a bit of creativity you can fit about any Ford passenger car or light truck engine ever made in there. The trick is (as others have said) engine mounts, as the original engines used a front mount and two rear mounts at the bellhousing (and no mount at the rear of the transmission) while most other engines use two side mounts and a mount at the rear of the transmission. So finding or fabbing brackets for the motor mounts and coming up with a crossmember to take a rear transmission mount is necessary.

240/300 I-6 & 352: 1965 F100/250 4WD - 1965/66 F350 - 1966 F250 4WD used the same '3 point' engine mounting system as 1957/64.

That's an accurate description. Engine mounts are available for all ford engine as are Trans cross members. I put a 390 FE with C6 in mine. Had to cut the factory trans cross member. Then fabbed engine and trans cross members and mounts.

My '59 has a mid '70s 302 and C4 swapped in place of the original 223 stick shift combo, using commercially available aftermarket mounts. It fits. Well and is probably as close as you can get to "bolt in".

Having said that, I wouldn't recommend you attempt this if you have a running truck, unless you have the tools and facilities as well as at least some mechanical wrenching experience.

Too many of these swaps get started but never finished because the owner bites off more than he can chew.

Rebuild what you have, and save the swap for later, when you have demonstrated to yourself that you have the talent and skills to successfully complete the job.

There is a lot of good advice here. Some have even installed a chev 350 or a smaller diesel. I am with the guys who say to install a good fresh y block. Sure fits well!
