F'n AC

This AC issue is in my 2011 F150 V6 XL basic Daily driver. I lived with a very poor AC last summer and will not do it again. So, this morning I clamped off both hoses to the heater core and viola, I have cold air. My question is, Do I have a broken blend door?

So I have some experience in broken blend door department.

With the heat on, see if you have a noticeable difference between lowest setting and highest setting. If you have dual zone feel the temp of both sides as you do this. When my blend door failed I only had cold on driver but passenger side still got full range of temp. Then I hit a pothole and my side was warm only...

I think the a/c air goes through the heater core, doesn't it? I remember there is something stupid about the design but can't remember what exactly. It certainly is the worst a/c I have ever had in any vehicle over the last 25 years.

This is very disappointing because every other Ford I own or have owned have had frigid systems. I just don't know what to do next.

It's not a dual zone. It's just a simple hot and cold manual control system.

I'm right there with you. Just the other day I thought my A/C was weak... But it did cool the truck down so I didn't complain. However my 04 Super Duty's AC generated condensation on the dash and occasionally snowflakes... This ac couldn't do that if its life depended on it.

Hi sportsdad,

I recommend making an appointment at your dealership so they can inspect. How many miles does your truck have currently? Let us know when you get a diagnosis.

Crystal, the last time I took it to the dealer for the AC it was under the full warranty. They did a full diagnosis and told me the system was within specs. That was bull. I checked it myself and although the system read fully charged, the temperature being delivered was in the low 70s. As of two days ago, the system is still fully charged and is now blowing in the low 80s. Since I clamped off the heater core, temps are in the high 40s. Ambient temps are in the mid 90s.

The truck has 82,000 miles on it now. It will be an emergency situation only if I take it back to the dealer.

Understood, sportsdad. Thanks for following up.

use a vacuum operated heater control valve. Similar to the SD. T the vacuum line into the fresh air door. Then every time you put it on Max AC it will close off the coolant through the heater core.

It makes a big difference on the F350 I drive. Im thinking of adding one to my 2013 F150

I did same thing while my truck was in for other service. Ford Dealer said all is well despite the fact its the weakest AC ever.

I've got this mod in my SD and you could hang meat in there in June. However, I don't have the time to work on this thing now. If I know for sure that something is broken in the system, I'll get through the summer with the hoses clamped off and then fix it this winter.

Thanks for your input everyone.

The four port valve might be a better solution, just so you don't mess up coolant circulation through the
engine and end up with hot spots.
