This one has me stymied. 2003 f150 4x4 180k 5.4. going down road about 40 ish and hearing metal to metal like brakes but not, I checked all good, then sounds like metal binding and releasing binding releasing then goes away or back to metal to metal brake like sound. 4x4 engaged no difference, turning either way, no difference. braking no difference, E-braking no difference. Definitively speed oriented. put in "N" no difference until slow down. Sound seems to be coming from rear of cab behind passenger side. WD-40 everything no difference. Tried to move main U-joints by hand seemed tight. Pulled rear rotors and e brake pads ok no leaks. WTH?? Any suggestions . . .PLEASE? All help is welcome. Thank you in advance. Don't know if this matters but ABS light went on about the same time but I found a broken wire on rear dif, fixed but light still on think sensor shorted out when wire grounded out.
On the front, 4x4 hubs have bearing packs that go bad.
This allows the disc to slant in relation to the caliper and shield plus any contact and bearing noise.
On the rear brakes, the emergency shoes and hardware rusts and fall off with no place to fall out. This can causes noise and jamming against the inner drum.
Good luck.
thanks Blue, took off both rear discs and made sure everything was in it's proper place and clean. How do I check the front bearing packs? Are these the CV joints or something different?
Front bearing pack check by jacking wheel off ground far enough to get under tire and lift/ move in and out..
Watch for a change in {disc to spindle} distance or the caliper mounting frame to disc change. This relationship should not change.
Do not confuse with a faulty ball joint.
Think about the relationships that exist between these parts vs movement.
Good luck.
If you have 4x4, you need to buy a whole bearing pack.
The front axle CV half splines through the center. The big nut only hold the axle in place. Some times the axle freezes in place so try to bang it out without damaging the threads on the axle, otherwise a puller or heat might be needed or let a good shop do the job.
The bearing pack is held into the spindle from the 'back side' with 4 bolts.
The bearing pack also mounts the ABS sensor on the front side but behind the air/splash shield.
It takes some work to get it tore down far enough to get the job done.
4X4 is greatly different than 2wd.
Read up on this and get your bearing pack first.
.
As a general note to all; never heat a factory ball joint trying to get it out of the spindle arm or out the lower control arm because they are a sealed unit and can blow up by self sealing the pressure build up inside.
A joint with an open grease fitting/hole would not seal that way.
.
Good luck..
