Another quick question for you guys. I have a steady squeak coming from the Bronco, and cant decide whether it is a bad U joint or wheel bearing. The only clue that may help you give me an answer is that the noise goes away when I apply the brakes, even when just touching them. Any ideas?
It sounds like you have a brake caliper hanging. You will most likely need to replace one (or both) of the calipers and the brake pads.
Calipers are designed to drag just a hair though - if you have cheap brake pads then they could squeak all the time, even with a good caliper. So check your pads and your calipers.
It's not your wheel bearings. We know this because the sound goes away as soon as you touch the brakes.
Thanks. I thought it may have been a bad U-joint since I have the suspicion that they are going. There is a little thunk when taking off from a stop, so I thought it may have been that. I havent had time to crawl under to check yet though but thank you for the input.
No problemo. And if you grease your rear driveshaft (under the boot, the slip joint
) then your clunk on take off should go away, that's usually what that is.
Im having the same problem in my 89EB 351. The squeek is constant with acceleration, and when the brakes are applied, the squeek becomes a lil louder and deeper in tone. Ive changed the U Joints on the front and rear shafts. The Rotors, Drums and Pads on the front and rear brakes have been replaced.
