Fuel tank breather lines

How important are the fuel tank breather lines? I have a 1996 F-150 4X4 long bed duel tanks. I see where each tank has it own breather hose that conect to a metal line that then runs up under the cab. It crosses over to the passenger side and goes to where I do not know. Any way right at the tank on the frame I broke the metal line where the two come together while redoing the brake lines. The breather lines were is such a sorry shape looking like sticks they were so rusty. Back to my question should or shouldn't I replace this line? If so what is it's purpose?

Many Thanks,
Eric

The vent line runs up to a charcoal canister.

You can do away with the lines and the canister. Just make sure you vent the tank

You can? I broke the lines to the cannister (weak/rusty) plus they are in the way of my new radius arm brackets also smell gas fumes like crazy. So im bending back and forth to make these lines work and you say I can just delete the vapour canister + lines? How would I go about venting it?
