Post Starting problem 1999 f250

I need some advice if anybody has heard of this problem before.

My 1999 F250 has been leaving me scratching my head. It wouldn't start one day. Had it towed to garage where diagnosis was the starter. Replaced starter and everything fine until the next day. It ran fine but later wouldn't start again. There was clicking from engine but wouldn't turn over. For some reason I pushed on the shift lever, while it was in park, turned the key again and it started.

I called a dealership and a tech there thought it sounded like a transmission sensor ie won't start if it thinks it's not in park.

Anybody hear of this before?

Same as a neutral saftey switch.

That is the number one cause of non-start situations.

You did said it sometimes clicked.
That usually means starter solenoid.

I agree - neutral safety switch.

Actually, '99 Should have a solenoid both on the starter, and on the firewall. I have not changed any of these yet bu in order to find it, follow your positive battery cables. If the truck is one of the many models that uses a relay solenoid to activate the starter solenoid (92 and newer), one of your hot cables will lead to the starter solenoid, one may lead to a power distribution box, and one should lead to the relay solenoid. You may find that if you have a relay solenoid, it must have power coming to it from the ignition switch and be sending power to the starter solenoid. Also, the nuetral safety switch sounds likely. to know for sure, you will need to have a friend turn the key to start while to check for power at the switch terminal(s) of your solenoid(s) If this is entirely confusing, let me know

Starting problem 1999 f250

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Aug-02 AT 10:34 PM (EST)]A common cause of "no start" condition is the push on connecter at the starter. The connecter that plugs into the solenoid on the starter motor becomes corroded and no longer allows the solenoid to function, ie pass current to the solenoid to cause the starter to function. If the starter relay at the fenderwell is clicking and you're not showing current drain with the starter switch in the start position then I'd check it out. Oh yeah, the neutral start switch is a prime suspect here too. Moving the shift lever to get it to start is kind of a "give-away" there.

Thanks to everybody for their advice. The dealer said the problem was the cable from the battery to the starter. They said they were able to start the truck if the cable was wiggled while turning ignition. They replaced the cable and kept the old one to show me, and it was badly corroded at the starter. I wonder how my regular mechanic missed that when he replaced the starter the week before???
No problems so far. I will need to have a talk with him I guess.

99 ford f250

I have a question about a 99 ford f250.
The truck starts on its own and wipers and lights flash on its own.
so far we have replaced the starter selenoid ignition switch and nothing happens. You can start the truck but when you shift only into drive the truck will run and drive fine. Anything else it sounds like the starter is sticking on or like the selenoid is sticking open? My last and only option as far as a vehicle!!
Can anyone help?

Look for water damage inside the firewall, around the fuse box and the GEM module near the fuse box. These trucks can get small windshield leaks and the water will run down the inside of the firewall and get into the fuse box and the electronic GEM box and cause all sorts of things to happen. If the floorboard at your feet is a little damp after a rain, that is surely what the problem is.
