So...I tried searching for a thread on this and couldnt find one, has anyone replaced // repaired their headliner? Mine has had the roof vents pulled out (previous owner) and I would like to get them put back in. However, the fiberglass surrounding the hole where they go is weakened. Also, if I have to take the headliner out to fix it, I might as well change the material. any help // opinions // advice would be great.
I've replaced my headliner a couple times, but not on the Ex.
Basically the headliner is made out of a thin molded piece of fiberglass and covered with a foam backed cloth.
Fiberglass if easily fixed and there are small patch kits available that will probably be more than enough for your repair.
The headliner material is entirely up to you, but some might be difficult to work with.
Ideally you would want something that has some stretch to it, that will make your life easier when it comes to the different contours. If you use official headliner material then it will most likely come foam backed. Otherwise you can glue down the foam first and then glue whatever type of material you decide to go with over the foam.
If you don't use the foam you will see every single bump and imperfection on the fiberglass.
I have recently removed the liner from my parts truck it is one big piece the seats and a few trim pieces have to be removed to allow the angle needed to get it out the back door. I tried with the seats in it was a no go. I removed the fronts first not enough then the driver rear hit the steering wheel then last passenger rear then it was able to come out. It was tight but doable. 2nd on the back side where the "ducting" runs is fiberglass also glued to the main liner so your repairs from the rear may be more than you think. I have the liner hanging in the garage I can get a photo of what I'm talking about when it is done raining
That would be awesome! Thanks! It one of those things that the roof vents aren't there isn't a huge deal, but it really bugs the hell out of me. And I think a nice vinyl cover would look really nice.
the photos are not super great but it shows all areas of the "ducting" on the back side. im pretty sure trying to remove it will lead to more damage than wanted. maybe you can do the repairs through the hole and reshape the opening when your done filling it
Oh I see. Thanks for the pictures, those are just fine quality. Yea I don't think I'll seperate, I'll have to find a way to fix them without it. Thanks again!
