Just picked up my 5th Wheel trailer that weighs in at about 7000 lbs. When starting out from a dead stop and having to give it a fair amount of pedal, I notice a slight shudder until build up a little speed. It doesn't do it if I start out gentle or without the trailer. Is this normal or a sign of impending E40D problems?
The truck is a '93 F-250 Supercab with 460.
I have the exact same problem that you have.........but reading the many post on this subject here more serious convertor trouble will effect you eventually when you upshift in higher gears at higher speed, if this is not happening as yet you may only need to change your tranny fluid and filter, making sure to drain the convertor, also changing the convertor at early signs of shudder may solve the problem as well.......... Usually this common problem with the E4OD is the first sign of transmission failure, eventually you may need a rebuild.
Pinion angle might be right at the edge of where it will cause driveshaft vibration. Added load and moderate to heavy acceleration may change the angle enough to make driveshaft vibration. Driveshaft vibrations can be difficult to repair. If its not severe I probably would just use a little less throttle at take off.
Thanks for the help guys. I will keep my eyes on both things and see how it goes. I was planning on flushing and changing the tranny fluid anyway but don't have time before the Fish Lake trip this weekend. There is one hill that will let me know if there is a problem. It is called transmission hill by many. Hopefully it will live up to the test.
Thanks again,
i suggest you change the fluid before you go. I had the same problem and I made a trip pulling my trailer down there to Loa, UT and when I got back I completely lost my OD. it will only cost you around $56 at autozone and only take you about an hour maybe an hour and a half. I am having to have tranny rebuilt and goign to cost any where from $1500-$2000.
and the front seal blew out. I had it R&R'd and replaced along with the converter bushing and now it's gone. Mine has more cooler on it than most tractor trailer rigs to boot. I do pull heavy loads at least two day a week in the mountains where we live. I'm going back to a manual tranny next time I buy a new to me truck, nothing beats them for pulling....especially the E4OD!
Well last night I took Eds advice, but since time was short, I bypassed my hatred for quick lube places and took it to the local Texaco Quick Lube. I can't believe the difference! I had thought the ATF looked pretty good, but in the light we were under you could tell it was getting brown. I haven't tried it under load yet, but the drive home made me believe this was a good thing. Before shifts felt like someone had installed a shift kit. Now you barely feel the shifts unless you have the pedal pretty weighed down.
Thanks to every body for your help.
Have you found a tranny shop that is trustworthy? I thought I had one, but he severely disappointed me recently so I will be looking for someone new. I hope not too soon, but I like to have an idea before I need it.
well when i first started lookin i checked out aamaco and freeway but they was pricey. friend owns master muffler suggested a few places i called them and decided to go with transmaster in WVC. they seem pretty competent and willing to explain things pretty good they are even allowing me to look over the tranny once unassembled to verify what is going to need replacing or updating. and being they are only starting their pricing at best case senerio compared to worst case senerio and going up form there. they sound like they can do it pretty quick as well. they are fairly leaniant on the warranty. if something breaks at 13-14 months they would probably replace for free even though the 12 month warranty is up. i guess I will really know that in a yr or so. they don't advertise or anything except for the phone book so most of their work comes from referrals so they strive to do good work.
