I have a few technical questions about the y block. The block I have acquired is from a 56 truck that had 15,000mi on the vehicle. My question concerns the pistons available for the 272. I had a piston get knocked off of my workbench and am trying to replace it. I found a KB piston through summit (# S3186-std) that weighed 742g (pin & piston) and am curious if it can be reduced to match my stock pistons at 695g. The piston from summit is for a 256 not 272, but by my understanding they are the same if not please correct me. I would also like to know who could do the balance work for the pistons.
Also I graduated high school one week ago, and am a novice in the field of engines. My family has a few classic vehicles but this is the first I have rebuilt myself. This engine will be going in a 59 F-350.
Hey gibby, welcome to FTE! You'll get some good answers here - tho for buying Y block parts be sure to check out Y blocks forever.com, (if you haven't) there is some good info there.
You was graduated from high school? Congratulations.
Y blocks are a little different on setup compared to Brand X, it pays to read up on common assembly errors for these. They are a great motor, but probably want a 57 or later distributor. Prior years had installed a vacuum-only advance design used with OE carburetor. 30-2808 is the advance auto part # for reman units to get away from "loadomatic."
I have the original 292 block for the truck with the later style distributor. I am using the 59 intake & carb and have pulled the distributor from the block. The block was filled with sludge & siezed or I would've attempted to use it. Instead of the 56 block
Is the engine you're going to use a truck motor? Probably a dumb question but not really familiar with all the flavors they came in. Truck engines had forged cranks, tho. Any heads will fit, so later, better flowing heads would be a good plan too. A pair of Mummert's Rams Horn headers would be an outstanding graduation gift to yourself I'm thinkin', too.
The engine I'm using was in a 56 F-250 that had been parked since 65. Miraculously this engine wasn't siezed. It has the ecz-c heads. I am planning to use the truck for pulling trailers when I have it running. Budget permitting I would also like to put a supercharger or turbo on the truck with wastegates to to keep boost under 8psi.
