Im new with this form thing. Ive never used one, so im not sure if im posting this in the right spot, but I really need some help this is my first 5th generation buy, I usually stick with the 6th gen. Well I recently bought a 72 F350 dully with a 360 ( so the owner claims) with the 4 speed granny low has a custom flat bed, everything on the truck works body is in the best shape I have ever seen. There's just a small quarter size hole in floor board. on the id plate on the door it says its a f374, as I recall that just has to deal with the towing capability. and it also has an invertor located on the drive side fender close to the core support, with two gauges, and two power outlets. So Im trying to find out weather or not it is worth putting a little bit of money into and selling? or should I just drop it while I can.
Left Front!? Is it just a power invertor or is it the rare Onan Generator Ford option?
BTW, Welcome to FTE!
yes its on the left front but it is not the onan generator. The third owner who bought it with intentions of restoring it had told me that, the second owner had told him it used to be a old government vehicle.(but no paper work came with the truck) it also has an air pressure gauge on the inside of the cab underneath the ignition. with a bracket that matches the cluster shell, same black with silver outlining. also with the id plate riveted on the door it is missing the section for the D.S.O. it has a number but every vin decoder has nothing for the numbers that are on the plate, and it is also missing the color and trim code.
I'm sure everyone here would want to see some pictures of this beast first.
I will be able to post pictures of it tomorrow. I still haven't ran engine numbers to see if its original. But from what I was told there has never been any recorded of it ever being changed.
Under the hood, mounted up on the driver's side wheel well and near the jack, there is a little box with two meters, two grounded 110 volt plugs and a little silver on/off switch. There is a bundle of wires the routes near the hood latch and then down by the regulator to the alternator/generator. Believe it or not, it still works! I must say though, it is rather weak. You would have to have someone inside revving the motor rather high to get full voltage....at least on this one.
It's funny that what you described is exactly what is under my hood.
Was this a factory option or some kind of kit that people could buy and install?

Pretty fun.
im not sure if it was a factory option or not. I bought the truck as a future project being im restoring a 77 f-150 4wheel drive with the 400 4speed granny low right now. this 72 is in great shape first one I have bought of this gen. and all my other trucks have been 6th gen. but the body and everything is in great shape, with a few interior fixes that I want to do, but that's just door panels and pull the engine go threw it and hide some wireing im just interested in knowing if its worth putting money into and what profit/ how much I can sell it for if I have to.

Do the 3G alternator swap Keith and I'm sure it will work better.
