Do I need a special tool to put the outer axel seal on a 2003 excursion? I could make one if I new how far down it needs to be.
I'm replacing the needle bearings in the back of the hubs and it looks like the last seals were not on far enough and the hub tore them up
If its flush with the top of the axle then the bearing can't hit it. The bearing will push the axle in..
Correct....you seat the knuckle/axle seal all the way down on the shoulder of the axle shaft. Once you reinstall the axle through the knuckle as far as you can go, don't force it too far, and once you reinstall the hub and torque the four mounting bolts, it will seat your axle and seal to its proper depth.
I believe the torque spec for the hub bolts is 166 ft/lbs.
I'm working the passenger side but I can't get the axel to come out. If struck the universal but it has not budged. I need it out to get the old broken seal off

It might need some convincing, but it should slid out. Look at post 17 in the link I posted above. You might have to use a pry bar as described to help it break lose.
So it's bad if that got destroyed?
The old seal was a mess and two pieces fell out and one was stuck to the axle and that shield
I have not started the other side yet
Replace the dust seal on the other end of the ujoint also. And check the ujoints.
Yes I had to wait until tomorrow to get that seal. I removed the bearing because that wheel would stick taking corners especially in 4WD turns out that it was all from a $15 needle bearing. It's a good thing it had not damaged the outer shaft
Tomorrow I will get the seals for the other side and see how it is
