I'm about to tow with a 94 explorer against my better judgement. I'm going from Seattle to Sacramento and there are lots of mountains between here and there. This is a bad idea but seems to be my only option.
So my first question is, the second D (drive) position is Drive without over drive, right? A4LD transmission.
Yes, that is the position that disengages overdrive. It is ok to use OD on flat ground while towing, but the moment you start having lockup disengage or you know that you are not going to be able to handle a grade in the higher gear, you should shift to the D position. Don't push things too hard, just go easy on it. How much are you towing?
Well it made it without to much trouble but I was pulling most of those mountains at 25 to 30 mph.
It does seem to have problems finding gears sometimes though. I'd get to 45 or 55 and it would start shifting back and forth between gears. I'd have to either floor it or take my foot off the pedal for a few seconds and then speed back up.
Also, it started vibrating at idle. Flashed a check engine light a few times so I'll pull those codes tomorrow.
