Well I bought a 1979 F-250 Custom a couple months ago, and I've finally gotten time to mess with it. Honestly, I don't know much about engines and such..but that's why I bought the truck. I want to learn.
I can get the truck to start just fine. It runs well, except that there is a small leak of gas coming from under the carburetor. I'm assuming the rubber gasket is bad, and it just needs to be replaced. I don't know if that's the real problem or where to start. Any help appreciated. Thanks!
Can you use a small inspection mirror to identify where the leak is coming from? Through a gasket under the carb, from the carb, back, side or front of carb, dripping from a part attached to carb?
Is it a stock Motorcraft 2bbl or 4bbl carb, aftermarket Holley 4bbl, or what?
When / under what circumstances are you seeing this leak?
Holleys and the MC carbsl use diaphragm accelerator pumps that can leak, power valves that can leak .... and Holleys often leak between carb main body or metering blocks and float bowls, and there's fuel line fittings that can leak. If floats are high, Holleys can also leak at float sight level plugs.
It is a 351M. It has a Holley 4 barrel. Not sure what size it is they drilled the holes bigger according to the guy I bought it from.
When the truck runs for a few minutes it starts to leak. It leaks just in the front right under the carb.
So if Holleys normally leak do I need to do anything about it or just leave it be?
I will put a picture up.
Any fuel on top of a hot intake is not good it will catch fire at some point and start melting shxt at the very least .. The heat will warp the mating surfaces in the carb and it will be junk .. Rebuild the carb .. A kit is about $30-$50 depending on the carb and use only genuine holley parts or you'll have the same problem you got now
