Front end noise

okay I have determined that I need to replace the Passenger side Universal Joint I got all 4 wheels off the ground and ran it and if you turn the wheel the passenger one Locks and will not budge. But besides that when I am driving strait I get a squealing Barking sound every now and then. If I engage the 4X4 it goes away. I thought it was a bearing but they spin freely and have no play in them at all.

Has any one else had this sound and knows what it is?

Some research said maybe the needle bearing?
Do you have to change the hub for that?
Does any one ells have a thought.

I had a squealing that would come and go when I would hit bumps. It was the needle bearing. I did not have to change my hub for it, but your diesel may be different,

You can change the needle bearing without replacing the unit bearing assembly.

If not caught early enough it will ruin the stub shaft.

So putting it in 4wd is stopping it from tearing up the stub shaft?

small Wheel Bearing Lesson

Yes.

Your vehicle has a live spindle bearing assembly. The wheel bearing and needle bearing ( axle support bearing) are always turning when the tire is moving but the axle is not if the locking hubs are not engaged. When the locking hubs are engaged the axle and needle bearing are turning together and therefore no friction in this axle support position. If you have a lever for manual engagement of transfer case then you can leave it in 2WD and manually lock the hubs and prevent the noise. Auto 4WD no luck you must repair needle bearing and axle immediately.

Older front axles had a dead spindle bearing assembly and all this is the opposite.

Remove unit wheel bearing assemblies and lubricate those needle bearing assemblies yearly unless you can run with the locking hubs always engaged and possibly lose up to 1MPG, you choose.
