Ex overheats

Ok Guys, my EX is a 2000 XLT 6.8 4WD I have 146,000 on it. Last week I replaced the expansion tank with a new one, went just fine no leaks, new prestone at 50/50, today she overheated to the red so I changed the thermostat, still overheating, no leaks fluid level good. What am I missing ????

You either have an air pocket or a bad tank cap. Does the heater work front and back?

The cap is very sensitive and some have had issues with new caps being bad right off.

the system holds pressure just fine, I was thinking of hooking a hose to it and flushing the system, I ran the defrosted the other day and it worked

Which thermo did you use? Was it an OEM thermo or a parts store thermo?

Go to Ford and buy a new OEM Motorcraft thermo and swap it in.

I have seen this numerous times after coolant flushes, the ford Caps tend to fail more often than not. Replace it with another for cap.

would this happen despite the cap still holding system pressure ? Well i just talked to the parts dept at the closest ford dealer and he has the cap, thermostat and gasket in stock COOL, gonna make a run at luch and hope this works.

Oh ya i was going to, I did a heavy cleaning on it before I started having problems Im sure there is crap that is still coming loose so I figure a normal 10 minute flush with some prestone flush then about an hour with the hose to dump the entire system real good wont hurt, but thanks for throwing that out there if i hadnt planned on it you sure would have reminded me

The new OEM thermo was suggested because of Brent's (EXv10) posts regarding his overheating problem https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post12588417

Since you've done all that, I'd be thinking it's the rad, the fan, or the water pump.

My bet is the rad is limiting flow.

I'd go with Stewart on this one being the rad. Take it out and have them clean it out and pressure ck it. You can save your old coolant to put back in. Also your fins on the rad might be plugged with dirt, sand and whatever else so ck those also. Is you water pump leaking from the weep hole?

Here is where I am on this, ford cap & thermostat, i dont see any leaks anywhere, coolant isnt in the oil or spitting out the exhaust, my upper hose is hot, my lower isnt collapsed, the fan clutch seems to be good, i am not seeing anything from the water pump weep hole, she only overheats after about 15 min at highway speed, i spray the radiator fins out every now and then and i dont drive off road, I am thinking the water pump impeller is shot but i will take any suggestion with much appreciation !
