Just bought a used 2004 F150 4.6L 130K-miles for my son about two weeks ago. He is renting a tralier to move home after college graduation last weekend. When he picked up the trailer the guy hooking everyting up mentioned that although the F150's are a great truck he mentioned some sort of "known" but not a recall in regards to either the spark plugs, coils or perhaps head gasket. My son is not real familiar with cars so his terminology sometimes is incorrect. I did some searching and only found that the plugs are tough to replace and apparently can break easy? There seems to be a lot more info on the 5.4 rather than the 4.6 I assume the 5.4 are more common? Is there any other issues to know?
Yes very well known spark plug issue with 5.4 3V built 04-07. Spark plug is two piece plug that breaks off in the head. A search of the forum will give you all the info on it you need. It doesnt affect the 4.6 2V that was put in the F-150's although it did affect the 4.6 3V that they put in the explorers and mountaineers. There is a removal tool made by Lisle that you can get for around 60 bucks or so that will enable you to remove broken plugs. Also, the plugs take a 9-16 socket instead of 5-8.
Just read your original post a little better and seen that you got the 4.6L. You got no worries, they are just typical standard plugs that you are familiar with dealing with. No issues on that engine.
no problem. 2V is a 2 valve engine, 2 valves per cylinder head. The 3V is the 3 valve engine, which has 3 valves per cylinder head. 2004 was the first production year of the 5.4 3V. Previously it was a 2 valve. I don't know when they first made the 4.6L 3 valve. Like I said though, they didn't put the 4.6 3V in the f-150, only in Explorers and Mountaineers.

Good info.
The 4.6L 3v did make it to the F150 in 2009 as an option. You could actually get the 2v or the 3v depending on trim.
