I've had ongoing issues with my truck since fall of 2011. In October Cheezit replaced the turbo with one from Riff Raff. Got along pretty well until a year ago. April, 2013, the HP oil pump, ICP sensor, and EGR cooler were replaced. Three weeks ago the VGT sensor, EGR valve, turbo variable boost control solenoid and the MAP sensor were replaced. Got another CEL and a sensor on the exhaust was replaced. Don't know which one, garage didn't charge me. Truck made it a few days and P0299 code again. Garage says turbo is bad and maybe it's time to cut my losses by getting rid of the truck. Is there anything else to look at?
You'll have to school me about CAC leak and according to th factory gauge the turbo seems to be working although when we towed last it made a funny sound like road noise while it was working harder and the fan was engaged. So, that noise might be the fan.
I had that code popping up too along with P0234. I'm pretty sure that's an indication of the turbo vanes sticking, correct? I was getting too much boost most of the time even though the code shows underboost. I think that's because the exhaust back pressure was excessive. Did you replace the unison ring? In my case I had excessive wear on the unison ring and things were dirty so I elected to install a Powermax and it seems to have taken care of the issue. Not saying you need to do that, but you probably need to remove the turbo and disassemble it for inspection and replace anything worn out.

A PowerMax is what I replaced the OEM with in October, 2011.
P0299 can be a nightmare code that can come from MANY things:
turbo, mainly a stuck VGT unison ring
a leak on the intake side between the turbo, charge air cooler, and the intake manifold
a biased ebp sensor or plugged tube
icp issues
IPR issues
high pressure oil issue
low side oil volume issue
FICM concerns (especially low voltage)
failing injectors
low battery voltage or alternator issue
fuel pressure
can even be triggered by a P0405 EGR valve failure
damaged MAP sensor or hose
an exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and turbo up-pipe to the turbo
a restricted exhaust or restricted (plugged up) intake
so - do you have any performance issues? I didn't see any described, but maybe I missed it. The noise you describe in the first post sounds totally like the fan to me (not related to the P0299)
Do you have an aftermarket intake?
And again - any leaks (even if the boost looks normal)?
There doesn't seem to be any performance issues, but there never has. It was running fine right up until it quit the last time with the high pressure oil pump problem. My wife has pretty much lost confidence in the truck; she doesn't relish the idea of getting stuck in the boondocks towing our 5th wheel.

I'm sure most of us can relate to the feeling you and your wife have. But I will say that you have just as much chance of that happening with any other truck for different reasons. Keep at it until you find the cause IMO.
Check the cac boots for oil leaking around them that would be a sign.
I cant believe it was that long ago I installed the turbo.
My guess is a sticking turbo again
I'll check it tomorrow. It threw a CEL almost immediately after I cleared it with the Scangauge II I bought today. I'm not much of a mechanic; I don't have the tools or the expertise. Oil and fuel filter changes are about extent of my skill.
