Well, after 20 years and 190,000 miles, my transmission finally failed. '95 e4od. Managed to get back to the cabin by driving backwards.
My Dilema is that we had to leave my Van in Wilkes-Barre, Scranton PA, and ride back in my friends truck back to Watertown, NY. I'm not sure how to get it back up here.
Anyone have any advice on finding a transmission? Should I take the original and have it built? Or can I trade it as core value somewhere and get a new one? Military Discount would be nice. I might be able to ride back down again this weekend. What do you all think?
Best bet is to get it rebuilt. Any other used transmission you buy is a crap shoot. They're not cheap to rebuild, that's the downside. But once it is done, you're good to go for another 100-200K, depending on how you treat it.
You could also contact Jasper for authorized dealers/installers near where the van is now stranded. The upside is a national warranty which would no doubt be a good thing to have, especially on work done away from your local area.
