I have a 1974 f-100 2 wheel drive automatic with a 360 all stock. I have replace the distributor, the cap, rotor, and igniton module(brain box). She runs better with the vac. advance pluged. she revs up but still idles rough and dies when hot but will still idle if you play with the throttle. she runs grreat when your foot is in it. But I connect the vac advance and it backfires like crazy out the carb when i slightly touch the gas. Me and my dad are at our wits end we have no Idea. Its about the best I can explain.
Inside the distributor there are wires that connect to the pickup module. They may have become brittle with age and movement. Do not try to fix them, just get a new module.
All that is new. I have replaceed all of that. Have you ever heard of adjusting the vacuum advance. With an allen wrench inside where the tube hooks up to the canister on the distrubutor.
Yes I have set my basic timing. It seems when she is hot and starts working is when it gets real bad. It wont even run with the vac adv connected. Does a motorcaraft two barrel have a power valve? What about the EGR valve would that cause any problems? Thanks
It was advanceing to much. So blocked the movement of thethe arm on the vac adv to half of its full movement. It runs now with the vac adv connected. But it still seems to idle rough and run a little rough when hot. I dunno but its working a lot better then it was
Is the vacuum advance ran to manifold vacuum or ported. My 390 runs best with it using ported vacuum - no vacuum at idle, only when throttle is open...
My '74 is having a running problem. Yesterday it started and ran beautifully, the engine purred at an idle. Today is spits and spurts and won't run. It seems to start when its cold but stalls when it warms up and won't restart.
That sounds mabey likle a coil going bad. When the coils sart to go bad they start to break down when hot. Whe there cool they will run ok but as soon as they get hot they lose their spark.
Marty,
What do you mean by ported I don't quite follow you?
Dennis,
I time the engine by plugging the vac adv and vac adv hose
Eric,
My timing marks have not slipped.
She runs great with my foot in it. Somebody said that I may have a vacuum leak so me and my dad are working on kittingthe carb.
Ported vacuum is the proper vac source for your distributor with stock specs. There is no vacuum on this line when the engine is idling, you only get a vac signal when the engine revs up.
