I went to my Ford dealer here in Alberta. I went to get a new ignition box that bolts to the inner fender well. He told me that Ford has discontinued the ignition box for 1974, and 75 and newer wont fit. So I have ordered a after market one and hope to fix my starting problem. One question though. The following suggesitions above these posts talk about a ignition module in or near the distributor that flexes with vacuum. What is that all about and how do I look for it?
Well I would like to start by saying thank you to all who responded to my problem. First I changed the box on the fender and that did not help. Then I changed the piece inside the distributor ( that little spring clamp thingy in the center of the distributor is a real pain ). And then success, the truck once a again runs like a dream.
Inside of the drivers door is all the information about the truck. It was made on ( 07 / 74 ). Is it a '74 or '75?
The Oreilley parts store around the corner has the Motorcraft units for $75 or $44. I would have to call them to check the reason for the price difference. You can get some aftermarket cheapies for as little as $16. The high $$ Lifetime Borg Warner modules will last about a year. I was going to check on the BW price but the Oreilley web site seems to have crashed.
I get my MotorCraft units from the salvage yard for $2 (some free) or from scrapping out vehicles, and test them at the local store. I have tested enuf modules they let me test my own unless I run into a nube there. I haven't found a bad Motorcraft DS unit yet. I can't say that about their TFI units.
I have replaced the ignition module,Distributor, Carb,re did a lot of the wiring new plugs and wires and she stil has a miss under a load and won't run with the vacuum advance connected. In the middle of the vac line there is a little green circle type thing does any body know what I ;m talking about? If you do is there a chance that could be bad. I need all the Ideas I can get I can't afford a mechanic and I need the truck for work.
Thanks
There is a pickup module inside the distrubutor with wires that flex every time you move the throttle
I want to change that... which part is it? I have no spark. Changed the "box" and voltage reg.
I have removed the dist. and taken the top apart. Down under the plate I see some stuff that has springy things and looks like it moves under centrifical force. Is this what we're talking about?
I should explain more... truck used to start and run sometimes just fine, other times it wouldn't start at all. Sometimes it would just quit out on the road... later I go back and it starts fine and I drive it home.
Now it just doesn't start... no spark, am I on the right track?

The part we are talking about is that thing just inside & on the side of distributor body that thing under the rotor with 8 vanes on it goes by.

Annoying isn't it? This tell me it might be a coil, connection, or a heat activated problem.
