Bed Bar question

I am thinking about putting a bed bar/roll bar on my 82 F150 stepside. I figure this would be best for me as I can mount my CB antenna to this as well as mounting some aux lights.

Thing is though I been looking and I see that Go Rhino has bed bars that fits 1973-1996 flare side F150 trucks. But they are showing a single bed bar with single kicker bars down to twin bed bars and twin kicker bars all the way to triple bed bars with twin kicker bars. I really didnt want kicker bars as it will cut down on bed space, I really wanted to get just the main bed bar and mount it to the wood bed with bolts and large body washers.

Would there be any issues doing this or would it look better with the kicker bars?

My opinion is to keep them, not only would it look "wrong" without them but they also add substantially to the stability & integrity.

You might want to look up "headache racks." I'm not sure where the term came from (I never heard of it until I was on this forum) but they are the racks / back-of-cab protectors that you see on a lot of flatbeds or logging trucks. They make them for pickups as well and the kickers on them often aren't as substantial as those on roll bars.

But if you want the look of a roll bar it pretty much needs the kickers. And if you want a bar to protect you in the event of a rollover it REALLY needs the kickers.

The term headache rack refers to your head getting bashed by a shifting load in a panic stop or front end collision.

I had a headache rack on another truck. Was a pain cause I could clean the outside of the glass. I'm looking at the roll bar/bed bar style as it has nothing blocking the rear window.

My problem is I am concerned about how far back and how close together the kicker bars are. I have a short wheel base and I prefer the kicker bars to mount no further back than the axle. I've seen some mount at the back edge of the wheel well.
