[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-May-02 AT 05:52 PM (EST)]Ok I have a '91 F-150 4x4 w/351w and i have noticed that when im going any Speed and give it Full throttle it dosnt kick in for about 2-3 Seconds, Now i dont know how fast it should Kick in but is this normal??
Plus i was wondering whats my truck Supposed to idel at? It is ideling at between 700 and 800 RPM but every once in a while when sitting at idel it will kick up to 1000rpm for a second.
Ive just started noticing little things like this, I just changed the Fuel Filter,Come to find out it is the stock Filter because it still has some Undercoating on it and the truck has over 180,000mi on it.
This is just a stab in the dark but, maybe the trottle position sensor? The best way would be to read the codes and see what the computer thinks. Anything that major will have most likely set a code.
What do you mean it takes 2-3 seconds to kick in? It that how long it takes for it to downshift a gear and raise the engine rpm? Does it have an auto tranny?
Since IM new to this, Can you guys tell me where the TPS is and What it looks like.
When i say 2-3sec i mean....Lets say im going about 20-30mph at 1500rpm and put the pedal to the floor it will pop up alittle in rpm's like about 1700 and then about 2-3seconds later it shoots up to 3000-3800rpm then shifts down to around 1200-1500rpm again. Its an Auto tranny.
Sorry if im not explaining it right but thats the best i can Explain it. :-)
P.s. when i gun it at any speed and it shifts at 3000-4000 rpm it shifts pretty hard but if i play nice (No full throttle) it shifts really quiet and smooth.

It might make a difference with how soon the truck shifts to the next lower gear.
If the truck has an electronic tranny it is probably the TPS.
The TPS, throttle position sensor, is located on the bottom of the throttle body and tells the computer how much throttle you are giving the engine. The computer uses this info to calculate fuel, timing advance and if you have an electronic tranny, the shift points and kickdown points.
Ok well i have the New TPS and i can see the Old one but im guessing its easier to take the throttle body off to get the old one off and put the new one on?I cant get to the screws that holds it on.Any tips?
For some reason the computer causes the delay in reaction. You can buy a sender that goes inline between the wiring and the TPS that will eliminate it.
Well i found the part at http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=22616 but it dosnt say it will fit the 5.8 but only the 5.0, im guessing it will work?? If it will fit is it worth the 100.00 it will run me after shipping.
P.s. i installed the TPS and it didnt solve the Problem
For the best throttle response the voltage should be set at .95 volts.
To test the voltage you need a digital multimeter. Probe the green wire coming out of the tps with the key on engine off. To adjust the voltage loosen the screws on the tps and turn it slightly, continue doing this until you reach .95 volts when the screws are tightened.
If it is not set at .95 adjusting it might help. It can't hurt to try it because it is FREE!
