Not really sure where to put this on the forums but this looks like a good place to start. So trying to get the trailer ready for the long trip. checked all the wiring and replaced the both sides of the electric brakes. when i hook up the trailer to the truck to test the brakes they dont really work. I jack up one tire and spin it then hit the brake in the truck and the tire keeps spinning. after a little bit the tire will just stop. I can hear the magnet engaging in the drum but its not slowing the tire down at all.
could this just be an adjustment i need to make on the shoes or could it be something else. My truck is a 2013 f150 so it has the built in brake controller. any ideas?
Spin the tire in the right direction as if you were going down the road?
There should be an adjustment on the controller to regulate the activation of the brakes.
Might be just adjustment, but, now would be a good time to pull the drums, inspect the brakes, lube needed places and pack the bearings.
Some brake controllers operate on inertia... they sense deceleration and apply brake current in proportion. If you have that type, it may not work in stands when stationary. Suggest you post the type of controller you have.
Often, pushing the override bar will apply the brakes with an inertia controller even stationary so that's worth a try. Also agree pulling the drums for inspection and adjustment is a good idea.
We will try to help here, but your truck is way newer than our old 73-79 rigs, that do NOT come with brake controllers. We have to add ours......
Did you get a OEM trailer connection adapter? Or did you get the adapter at Wally world? Is your truck a 7 pin and is the trailer plug the same way? If it only works the lights and no brakes, its the blue or orange wire that normally work the elec brakes and the wally world adapters are NOT connected. Ck that.
Are you sure you have the elec set up connect correctly on the trailer?
Blue and White is correct, the new controllers all work by inertia. They only apply voltage to the magnets when the truck is moving. The fact that you hear the magnets engaging while sitting is unusual. Maybe there is some residual voltage there when the brakes are applied. I would pull the drums and inspect the brakes. If every thing looks good then I would adjust the brakes and take it for a drive and test them. Find a dirt road and slam on the brakes and then go back and check the skid marks. Don’t do this on asphalt as you might put some flat spots on the tires.
